From the beginning of Laurel Mercantile Co.'s inception in 2016, our team sought out a way to elevate American makers and promote locally made goods. We've learned over the years that it takes a village to make a creative community flourish. That's why we created Mississippi Made, a Saturday market that features local artisans and makers from Mississippi. On Saturday, September 3rd, we will have twenty local vendors along with delicious, local food trucks. Creation, Craft, and COVID-19 is a documentary film that looks into the creation and development of a small jewelry business called Novi Creations based in Laurel, Mississippi. This thesis interviews Shauna Stockstill, the owner of Novi Creations, and presents the history of the business, its daily processes, and its struggles through the COVID-19 pandemic. This thesis also covers the planning and pre-production of the film and the performative method of approach. It breaks down different styles of documentary filmmaking and addresses ethical dilemmas found commonly in documentaries. I express my reason for creating this film and desire to share Shauna’s story, and I explain how my use of lighting, footage, and music add to the emotional expression in the film.
