We would like to welcome you to Knox County, Kentucky. Knox County is located in the beautiful mountains of Southeastern Kentucky and is the home of many first in our region, our county is the home to the first college in the mountains Union College.
Come enjoy the Appalachian culture with arts and crafts, food and fun with us the first full week in October each year as we host the longest-running festival in Kentucky state history - The Daniel Boone Festival. In 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker built the first house in Kentucky, you can visit a replica at Dr. Thomas Walker State Park located here in Knox County. In 1775 Daniel Boone cut the first trails throughout the region, you can trace his footsteps on the Boone Trace Trails located throughout Knox and surrounding counties. At our civil war park you can stand in the location of the first civil war battle in the state of Kentucky. Along with other first, in 1929 Knox County elected the first female sheriff in the state of Kentucky, Mrs. Jennie Walker. Knox County industry has seen growth while many other local economies have not been as fortunate. With ground work being done on a new race track for Keeneland along the northern part of our county and the progress of the Appalachian Wildlife Center to the south of our county it is a great time to be a part of this community.
