The Grand Rapids Symphony is set to celebrate its 95th season with a captivating lineup that spans classical masterpieces, lively pops performances, and special events that promise to be unforgettable. This season caters to everyone, from lifelong classical enthusiasts to those who enjoy the occasional concert.
The Richard and Helen DeVos Masterworks Series begins on Sept. 13 and 14 with an opening night that sets the tone for a season rich in musical excellence. The series, hosted at DeVos Performance Hall with a new start time of 7:30 p.m., includes a variety of subscription options. On Sept. 27 and 28, the Symphony presents “For the Love of Violin,” a program that highlights the instrument’s profound emotional range. In February, the series will feature Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, a piece known for its technical challenges and emotional depth, performed on Feb. 28 and March 1. The season will also bring Gustav Mahler’s symphonic grandeur to life on March 21 and 22, with a performance of his works that will feature an exhilarating timpani showcase. Another highlight is the powerful presentation of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” on April 25 and 26, a choral work that has captivated audiences since its debut in 1937. The season will conclude on May 9 and 10 with “Death and Transfiguration,” a reflective and stirring piece by Richard Strauss.
The Symphony Specials are set to feature some of the most anticipated events of the season. On Oct. 1, the legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma returns to Grand Rapids for a special performance that is sure to be a highlight of the year. Yo-Yo Ma, known not only for his technical mastery but also for his deep emotional connection to the music he performs, has captivated audiences worldwide for decades. On Dec. 18 and 19, the Symphony presents “Home Alone in Concert,” where the beloved holiday film will be accompanied by a live performance of its score, adding a new dimension to the classic movie experience. The season’s special events will also include “Symphony With Soul” on Feb. 15, featuring Grammy-winning artist Common. Known for his insightful lyrics and soulful voice, Common will bring a unique blend of classical and contemporary music to the stage, offering an evening that bridges musical worlds and brings the symphony experience to a broader audience.
Morning performances continue with the Coffee Masterworks series at St. Cecilia Music Center, starting at 10 a.m. On Nov. 22, audiences can enjoy “Coffee with Mozart,” an intimate setting to appreciate the works of one of history’s most beloved composers. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who composed over 600 works, remains a pillar of classical music, known for his extraordinary ability to blend form and emotion. The series continues with “Coffee with Haydn” on Jan. 31, a tribute to the man often called the “Father of the Symphony,” followed by “Coffee with the GRS Chorus” on March 7.
The Chamber Masterworks series, also held at St. Cecilia Music Center at 7:30 p.m., brings a more intimate concert experience. The series begins on Nov. 22 with “An Evening with Mozart,” offering a deep dive into the intricate and expressive works of the classical genius. On Jan. 31, the focus shifts to Joseph Haydn, whose influence on the development of chamber music is profound. The series concludes on March 7 with “An Evening with the GRS Chorus,” showcasing the vocal talents that bring a unique dimension to the symphony’s offerings.
The Fox Motors Pops Series at DeVos Performance Hall introduces a mix of fun and festive programming, now starting at 7:30 p.m. On Nov. 1 and 2, the series kicks off with “Fright Night,” a Halloween-themed concert that blends spooky sounds with symphonic flair. The University of Michigan Health-West Holiday Pops follows from Dec. 5-8, a festive celebration that has become a beloved holiday tradition in Grand Rapids. As winter turns to spring, the series will present “Take Me Out to the Ballgame!” on March 14 and 15, a concert that celebrates America’s favorite pastime through music. The series concludes with “An Evening at Hogwarts: Music by Candlelight” on April 11 and 12, inviting audiences into the magical world of Harry Potter through the unforgettable scores composed by John Williams, who has been enchanting listeners for decades with his iconic film music.
The Family Series offers concerts designed for younger audiences. On Nov. 2, “Spooky Symphony” will delight children and adults alike with its fun, Halloween-themed program, starting at 2 p.m. On April 12, “Hogwarts Adventure” continues the magical journey, also at 2 p.m., allowing families to experience the wonder of Harry Potter through the symphony’s enchanting performance.
