Arsenal transfer news recap - Gordon interest, Sterling 'offer', Coman update (2024)

Hello and welcome to football.london's dedicated Arsenal live blog on Deadline Day eve! There's now less than two days to go until the summer transfer window slams shut.

The Gunners could be one of the teams to follow with plenty of business still expected. After Mikel Merino was announced as the second major addition to Mikel Arteta's squad, it's all hands to the pump.

Eddie Nketiah will make his move to Crystal Palace permanent at some stage before Friday's 11pm cut-off, whilst Aaron Ramsdale's exit to Southampton moved a step closer on Wednesday. There is also Champions League draw action this morning to be right over as well.

On the incoming front and Arsenal are still after a new forward (or maybe two) if the right options emerge. A striker could yet be on the cards - say, Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, Ivan Toney, or the like - with a backup winger for Bukayo Saka also being a possibility.

There isn't set to be the firesale going the other way though with Thomas Partey's future not becoming a big talking point. Gabriel Jesus will be staying, as will Jakub Kiwior.

We'll have all of this and much more to come. Don't go anywhere!

Follow below for all the latest Arsenal transfer updates, stay with us throughout the day!

Souness makes Rice claim...

Speaking on the Three Up Front podcast by William Hill, Graeme Souness said: "When you talk about players who are overhyped, you also have to factor in transfer fees, and Declan Rice comes to mind.

"I don’t think he is worth the £100m that Arsenal paid for him. I would also mention Jack Grealish in that conversation. £100m is a lot of money and for that you’re looking at signing a world-class footballer.

"My definition of that is someone who gets into any team in the world. I think there are only a handful of world-class players in the Premier League at any one time..."

Arteta urged to sign a new striker!

Speaking to Online Slots Real Money, football injury expert Ben Dinnery said: "With regards to Gabriel Jesus’ latest injury setback, the conversation was already moving towards whether Arsenal should be bringing in an out-and-out striker.

"I think given how many games and tournaments they’re playing in, the club bringing in another attacker could be the difference between them finishing first in the Premier League or having another season where they just fall short again and come second.

"It would make sense for them to sign someone else if they can the right player. Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard can both do jobs in there, but if you want to be competing and moving onto that next level, especially against a club like Manchester City who have far superior squad depth, then they should definitely look to bring someone in..."

Shearer makes title prediction

Speaking to Betfair, Alan Shearer said: "To win the title, you need a very, very good goalkeeper. Man City have Ederson who's pulled off great saves a number of times over the years and now David Raya, has made two early in the season to help win them the points.

"Yes, you need top quality defenders too and Arsenal have got that. They had the best defence last year and they've spent a fortune on a new left sided defender in Riccardo Calafiori.

"There may be more additions along with Merino so let's see if anything happens in the next day or so..."

Gordon 'interest'

According to the MailOnline, Arsenal have expressed an interest in Anthony Gordon, but the winger is expected to stay Newcastle United. The report stataes that Edu, the Gunners' sporting director, is a 'big admirer' of the 23-year-old, was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool earlier this summer.

MailOnline claim that Arsenal could make an approach for Gordon next summer, but the England international is said to be happy at St James' Park, with preliminary talks over a contract extension having opened.

Should Arsenal go for Toney?

Speaking to Betfair, Alan Shearer said: "I like Ivan Toney. I think he can do a really good job for someone - he's an excellent player. Obviously, he knows the Premier League, he knows what it's about and he's proven at that level.

"He's an England international too. He only has one year left on his contract, and I understand why some players would want to go to Saudi Arabia, but for someone like him who's in the prime of his career, he's got another four or five years ahead of him and I would hope that he stays in English football because I think he has a lot to offer.

"I am slightly surprised that Man United haven't enquired about him..."

More on the Champions League campaign...

Should Arsenal finish in the top eight of the new-look Champions League table, they will progress automatically to the round of 16. The teams ranked from nine to 24 will then face off against each other in a two-legged playoff to determine the next eight sides to advance to the knockout phases.

The ninth placed team facing the 24th, the 10th-placed team facing the 23rd and so on. There are plenty of things to consider when mapping out the fixture list. For example, security considerations that dictate certain teams can't take part in a match on the same night in certain cities.

As a result teams will have to wait until Saturday to find out when they will be playing their fixtures. The games could have a huge impact on Mikel Arteta's campaign to win Arsenal's first Premier League title in over 20 years.

Kiwior doubt

Kiwior also faces an uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium. The 24-year-old defender, who only joined Arsenal from Spezia for £21m in January last year, has been heavily linked with a return to the Italian top flight.

football.london understands that a player-plus-cash deal with Bologna involving Kiwior was mooted, but the Poland international wasn't keen on a move to the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara. He featured 20 times for Arsenal in the Premier League last season, helping Arteta's side keep 10 clean sheets.

With William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes proving to be undroppable, Kiwior struggled for minutes. In fact, he has only made 10 starts in the English top-flight – nine of which came at left-back despite being a centre-half on paper.

Tierney faces an uncertain future

Tierney has been linked with an exit from Arsenal for some time – even more so now following the signing of Calafiori. The 27-year-old defender spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad after falling out of favour under Arteta.

Despite an injury-ridden campaign, Tierney still managed to feature 20 times in the Spanish top flight. The Scotland international helped Real Sociedad finish sixth and secure Europa League qualification ahead of the likes of Real Betis, Villarreal and Valencia.

Unfortunately for Tierney, he picked up another knock at Euro 2024, denting the Gunners' chances of offloading him. Nevertheless, Arsenal will be keen to cash in on the Scot, who sees his contract expire in two years.

Arsenal learn UCL opponents...

Arsenal have been drawn against PSG (H), Inter Milan (A), Shakhtar Donetsk (H), Atalanta (A), Dinamo Zagreb (H), Sporting CP (A), AS Monaco (H) and Girona (A) in UEFA's new-look Champions League group stage this season.

Last season, Real Madrid dethroned Manchester City, defeating Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley Stadium. This term, UEFA have implemented a so-called 'Swiss model' to increase the number of competing sides in the Champions League proper from 32 to 36.

Rather than operate a standard group stage, a single league has been formed, guaranteeing at least games for each team. Not every team in the league will lock horns, with UEFA seeding a draw to determine fixtures...

Nketiah set to join Premier League rival

Despite his impressive performances when called upon, Nketiah has struggled to force himself into Arteta's plans at Arsenal, and he now looks set to join a Premier League rival. football.london understands that the 25-year-old striker is close to joining Crystal Palace.

It's believed that the Gunners are hoping to rake in £30m for Nketiah – the second academy graduate to be dumped by Arteta this summer. Earlier in the window, Arsenal sold Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham for £34m.

Coman update

With Arteta eager to bolster his frontline, Arsenal have explored a potential bid for Coman, according to the MailOnline. The report states that the 28-year-old winger, who sees his contract at Bayern Munich expire in June 2027, has recently attracted interest from Saudi Arabia.

Coman currently faces an uncertain future and the Gunners have been reportedly alerted by his situation in the final hours of the window. The MailOnline add that the France international currently earns £300,000-a-week at the Allianz Arena, so there are doubts whether Arsenal would match his wages.

Brighton have suffered a huge injury blow ahead of their trip to Arsenal on Saturday. Matt O'Riley, who joined the club for £30m from Celtic earlier this week, was taken off after just nine minutes into his debut on Tuesday after suffering a nasty ankle injury.

Fabian Hurzeler said: "Like we expected, it's a bad injury. He needs surgery on his ankle.

"I can't say how long we expect him to be out. We have to look at how the rehab will go but of course it is a tough one for us.

"We will try to support him the best way we can and get him back on the pitch as fast as possible. Let's hope he will be back soon."

Striker alternatives

More from Ben Jacobs, who has revealed some of the names being looked at by Arsenal in the late hours of the window.

“They've looked at Santiago Gimenez, who we know that Nottingham Forest are struggling to get over the line but, at the time of recording, are still working on.

Evan Ferguson has been considered, but the price is very high, and he didn't have the most consistent goalscoring season last campaign.

Winger details

The Telegraph write that Arsenal are indeed still in the market for a new winger before the deadline, but it will only come on one condition.

The club need to sell first, with Reiss Nelson the obvious candidate. At this stage it looks unlikely that any other high-profile deals we aren't already aware of will be completed out of the Emirates Stadium, so that throws doubt on the attacker front.

Kiwior interest

Ah, will this comes despite suggestions yesterday that Jakub Kiwior was told he wouldn't be leaving Arsenal.

Reports in Spain say that Villarreal are keeping tabs on the defender just in case the situation changes, anyway.

Kiwior has had parties watching throughout, including Crystal Palace, apparently.

Bologna and Inter are among the other sides mentioned. It is Villarreal entering the party late on though.

Garcia issue

Arsenal have a problem in their bid to try and sign the goalkeeper.

Kaya Kaynak addresses the late issue:

This late in the window, there's no way that Espanyol are going to accept anything less than a full release clause for Joan Garcia.

That makes personal terms essential as Arsenal know they will have to move fast. Hence why they've got that done nice and early.

Forward demand

Yep, no surprise here.

Kaya Kaynak explains:

Arsenal are definitely trying to get a forward. There are a few irons in the fire between now and deadline day on Friday and Arsenal have kept tabs on their targets all summer.

Obviously Nico Williams was the preference, but that's not looking likely to happen as things stand.

Ramsdale finances

Fabrizio Romano has broken down just how much Arsenal will be getting for the player.

He says that there will be an initial £18million fee, that goes up another £1million if Southampton remain in the top flight.

The final £6million all come in the form of performance-related bonuses.
